Job Description: Corrections Officer
The Corrections Officer plays a critical role in maintaining safety, security, and order within correctional facilities. This position requires individuals with a strong background in social sciences, particularly sociology, to effectively manage inmate behavior and contribute to the rehabilitation process. As a Corrections Officer, you will be responsible for enforcing rules, maintaining discipline, and ensuring the welfare of inmates, staff, and the general public.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Monitor and supervise inmates to ensure compliance with facility rules and regulations.
2. Conduct regular patrols and security checks to prevent escapes, violence, and contraband within the facility.
3. Respond promptly to emergencies, disturbances, and incidents, utilizing appropriate crisis intervention techniques.
4. Assist in the classification, assessment, and placement of inmates based on their individual needs and risks.
5. Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to develop and implement rehabilitation programs aimed at reducing recidivism.
6. Conduct searches of inmates, cells, and common areas to detect and confiscate unauthorized items.
7. Prepare detailed reports on inmate behavior, incidents, and disciplinary actions taken.
8. Provide counseling, guidance, and support to inmates, promoting positive social interactions and personal growth.
9. Ensure the safety and security of all individuals during inmate transportation to and from court appearances or medical appointments.
10. Participate in ongoing training and professional development activities to stay updated on relevant policies, procedures, and best practices.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Sociology or a related field is strongly preferred.
2. Proven knowledge of sociological theories and concepts, with a focus on criminal behavior and social deviance.
3. Excellent understanding of correctional practices, procedures, and regulations.
4. Strong observational and analytical skills to assess inmate behavior and identify potential risks or threats.
5. Ability to remain calm, composed, and professional in high-stress situations.
6. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with inmates, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
7. Physical fitness and stamina to perform security checks, restrain inmates if necessary, and respond to emergencies.
8. Proficiency in using various computer applications for data entry, report writing, and communication purposes.
9. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, as well as independently with minimal supervision.
10. Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as required in a 24/7 correctional facility.
